Who this is for

Adults. Men in their twenties, thirties and beyond who want a relationship and are tired of advice that treats women as a puzzle. If you are at school, nothing on this site is written for you.

We say girlfriend because that is the phrase people search. On the page we mostly say woman, because you are asking a peer to spend time with you: not winning a prize.

Start here

Start with the numbers, not the tricks

Most "how to get a girlfriend" advice starts with your haircut. The useful place to start is the shape of the problem, because it explains why effort in the wrong place produces nothing.

In the United States, meeting online became the most common way heterosexual couples meet around 2013, overtaking friends for the first time. The finding of Stanford's long-running How Couples Meet study, published in PNAS in 2019. Friends, work and school have all been shrinking as introduction channels for a decade; bars and restaurants are the one offline channel that actually grew in the same data.

At the same time, 63% of men under 30 describe themselves as single, against 34% of women the same age (Pew, 2023). And among singles, men are far more likely to be actively looking: 61% versus 38% (Pew, 2020). More men looking, fewer women looking, and the main channel is one where a small share of profiles gets most of the attention.

What that means for you

Two things. First, being single in your twenties is the statistical norm, not a verdict — 86% of 18-to-24-year-olds are unpartnered (Pew, 2025, from census data). Second, a strategy that is app-only puts you in the most crowded room. The men who do well use apps and rebuild the older channels on purpose.

The one variable that moves the odds

Not looks. Not lines. The number of people you genuinely talk to in a week. Every step in the plan below is about raising that number in places where the conversations recur.

A morning market stall with flowers and produce in soft light
Before dating

Fix your week before you fix your profile

The men who struggle most are not unattractive. They are under-exposed: work, home, gym with headphones on, repeat. No new people enter the week, so no relationship can start in it.

This is also a loneliness problem before it is a dating one. Gallup found a quarter of American men aged 15 to 34 felt lonely a lot of the previous day, well above the national 18%, and no other OECD country has a wider gap between young men and everyone else. Pew found men are much less likely than women to turn to a friend for emotional support (38% vs 54%). A thin social life makes every single date carry too much weight.

The fix is boring and it works

  • Two recurring things a week where the same people show up: a class, a sport, a volunteering shift, a running club, a choir. Recurrence matters more than the activity. It turns strangers into acquaintances without any effort on the day.
  • Say yes to invitations for a month, including the ones that sound dull. Friends-of-friends is still one of the strongest channels and it only works if you are in the room.
  • Reconnect with two people you have drifted from. A wider circle is where introductions come from.

Why "work on yourself" advice fails

Because it has no end date. Men spend a year getting in shape and reading books as a way of postponing the frightening part. Do the self-improvement alongside meeting people, never instead of it. You do not have to be finished to be worth dating; nobody is.

If you are shy

Choose the settings with the most built-in repetition and the least pressure to perform. A weekly class beats a bar every time: the conversation starter is the thing you are both doing. The National Institute of Mental Health describes progressively confronting the situations you avoid as a standard part of therapy for social anxiety. One short, low-stakes conversation a day is that practice.

Channels

Where to actually look — and what each channel costs you

Every guide lists "six places to meet women". None of them tells you the trade-off. Here it is: volume against warmth. Apps give you the most people who are openly available and the coldest start. Friends give you the warmest start and the fewest people. Plan for both.

ChannelVolumeWarmth of the startTime to a first dateBest for
Dating appsHighest: openly available peopleCold; you are a photo among hundredsDays, if you suggest meeting earlyMen with little social circle, or in a new city
Friends of friendsLowWarmest: vouched for before you speakWeeks; depends on invitationsAnyone with a circle they have neglected
Classes, clubs, sportMedium, and it compoundsWarm. Shared activity does the talkingWeeks to monthsShy men; anyone who wants friends as well
WorkMediumWarm, but riskySlow, and rightly soOnly where no reporting line exists. See asking a colleague

Cold approach in publicUnlimited in theoryColdest; she did not opt inRarelyHonestly: almost nobody. Most women dislike it, and it trains the wrong habits

Where should you put your effort?

Two honest answers about your week, and you get a channel mix with the reasoning. Not a quiz: a lookup built from the trade-offs in the table above.

Your mix

One app, run properly, plus one recurring activity a week.

Why

With a few hours and average comfort, the app supplies volume while the activity supplies people who know you before you ask. Neither alone is enough.

Skip

Bars and cold approach: low yield for the hours, and they burn confidence.

Built from the channel table above and the Stanford / Pew data on how couples meet. It is a starting mix, not a prescription.

Apps, honestly

Dating apps: what they are for, what they cost, and the one rule

Apps are the highest-volume channel and the one most men use badly. Three in ten US adults have used one; 12% have married or been in a committed relationship with someone they met on one (Pew, 2020). They work. They also produce the most frustration: experiences split 53% positive to 46% negative (Pew, 2023).

The one rule

Suggest meeting within a week of matching, or move on. Long message threads feel like progress and almost never become dates. A concrete, low-key invitation. "this has been fun, coffee on Thursday?". Is the whole skill. If you want the wording, it is on the asking-out page.

What a working profile has

  • Six photos, at least four with your face clearly visible, at least one doing something you actually do
  • A bio with two specifics. A place, a thing you are learning, a strong opinion about food, and no list of demands
  • No group shots where she has to guess which one you are, no sunglasses in every frame, nothing from five years ago

Paying: does it help?

About a third of users have paid at some point (Pew, 2023). Paid tiers mostly buy visibility and information, who liked you, unlimited likes. They do not fix a weak profile or a habit of never asking. Try one month on one app if you are getting no matches at all; otherwise the money is better spent on the class.

What the big four charge (US App Store, checked 19 September 2026)

AppPaid tierListed prices
TinderPlus / GoldPlus from $9.99; Gold $13.99–$24.99
HingeHinge+ / HingeXHinge+ $16.99–$19.99; other tiers $14.99–$34.99
BumbleBoost / PremiumBoost $7.99–$12.99; Premium $17.99–$32.99
MatchStandard / Premium$19.99–$44.99 a month; $129.99 six-month bundle

Prices are the in-app purchase amounts Apple lists on each app's US store page; the same tier appears at several prices because apps vary by term and user. Check inside the app before paying.

Safety, briefly

Meet in a public place, tell someone where you are going, and get there under your own steam. University police departments give exactly this advice for online dating, and it applies to everyone. If she mentions sharing her location with a friend, that is sensible, not a comment on you.

The plan

A 12-week plan with checkpoints — and stop conditions

Lists of "10 steps" have no timeline, so nobody finishes them. This one has weeks, a number to check at each stage, and a rule for what to change if the number is zero. The point is not to have a girlfriend at week 12. The point is to have changed the inputs, which is the only part you control.

Weeks 1–2 — fix the week

Book two recurring activities where the same people show up. Accept every invitation. Tell two friends you are single and open to introductions.

Checkpoint: number of new people you spoke to. Target: ten. If under five, your week still has no doors in it: add a third activity, not a second app.

Weeks 3–4 — talk with no agenda

One real conversation a day, with anyone: the person next to you in class, the barista, a colleague you only nod at. You are not looking for a girlfriend in these. You are becoming someone conversations happen to.

Checkpoint: conversations that lasted past small talk. Target: ten in two weeks. If most die instantly, ask one more question than feels natural. People who ask follow-up questions are liked more, in a Harvard study of both conversations and speed dates.

Weeks 5–6 — one app, set up properly

Six photos, two specifics in the bio, one app. The rule from above: suggest a coffee within a week of matching or let it go.

Checkpoint: matches that became a suggested meeting. Target: two. If matches are zero, the profile is the problem. Get a female friend to edit it. If matches exist but meetings are zero, you are not asking. Go to the wording page.

Weeks 7–8 — ask someone out

One clear, specific invitation to someone you have actually talked to, from any channel: "I've enjoyed talking to you, coffee on Saturday?" Accept the first answer either way. If it is a no, this is what to do next, and it is much less than you think.

Checkpoint: invitations made. Target: two. This is the number most men leave at zero for years. Nothing else in the plan works if it stays there.

Weeks 9–10 — go, and keep the routine

Short, public first dates: coffee, a drink, a walk. Do not drop the class or the club because a date happened; the routine is what produces the next one. The first-date page covers the evening and what to text afterwards.

Checkpoint: first dates. Target: one. A yes that never became a plan does not count. Fix the day and place while you are still talking.

Weeks 11–12 — review the numbers honestly

Write down the four counts: people spoken to, real conversations, invitations, dates. The stuck number tells you the problem. Zero conversations is a social-life problem. Zero invitations is a fear problem, and it has a specific fix. Zero dates from several invitations is usually vague asking.

Stop condition: if anxiety about asking is costing you more than the outcomes, treat that as its own thing. A doctor or therapist is a normal step, not a dramatic one.

What women look for

What actually makes a man attractive — from research, not forums

Ask the internet and you get height, money and "confidence". Ask the studies and you get a shorter, more reachable list.

A 2021 cross-cultural study of mate preferences led by Buss's group found kindness, health and intelligence are considered very important by both men and women, with kindness rated highest of all: around 6.2 on a 7-point scale for both sexes. The same team's 2019 analysis of 14,487 people across 45 countries treated kindness, intelligence and health as the traits people everywhere rate as highly important. These are not soft findings.

Humour is real too, but not the way "be funny" suggests. In speed-dating research, men's humour production and women's responsive laughter both tracked with women's dating interest — humour works as a signal of warmth and ease, not as a performance.

What is not on the list

Being mysterious. Playing it cool. Waiting three days. Every one of these comes from a model where you are managing her impression instead of having a conversation, and each one makes you worse company.

Kindness

Top of the list across cultures and both sexes. Practically: how you treat waiters, how you take a no, whether you listen.

Interest in her

Follow-up questions raise liking in both ordinary conversation and speed dates (Harvard, 2017). Curiosity beats charm.

Ease

Humour and laughter in early dating track with interest. Not jokes. Being relaxed enough to be funny.

Clarity

Saying what you want. In Pew's data, six in ten women aged 18–34 on apps say someone kept contacting them after they said no. Clarity is the opposite of that.

You are not trying to be impressive. You are trying to be easy to say yes to, and easy to say no to.

Specific situations

Three versions of the question people actually search

In a big city: New York, London, anywhere dense

Cities are the easiest place to get a girlfriend on paper and the loneliest in practice, because density without recurrence is just crowds. The fix is the same as everywhere, applied harder: two recurring activities in your neighbourhood, not across town, and an app radius small enough that a first date is a twenty-minute walk.

A summer girlfriend, something casual

Legitimate, if you say so. "I'm here until September and I'd like to spend it with someone" is honest and plenty of people want the same thing. What is not legitimate is wanting casual and letting her assume otherwise. See what casual actually means.

When she has a boyfriend

Then she is not available, and this page is not for that. Trying to get a woman who is in a relationship to leave it is not a dating strategy; it is asking her to hurt someone, and it tells her exactly what you would do later. Be a decent person in her life and put your effort into people who are single.

Not covered here on purpose: school-age questions (this site is for adults), getting an ex back (a different problem with different advice), and getting a girlfriend in GTA. The search results are full of it, and it is a game.

By stage of life

In your twenties, in your thirties, starting late

20s

Early and mid twenties

The most crowded market and the most anxious one. Most people around you are single (86% of 18–24s are unpartnered), and per Pew, majorities of singles under 30 do want a relationship or dates, so the crowd is real, but so is the demand. Do not read the noise as rejection. Your edge is recurrence: classes, teams, shared houses, friends-of-friends.

Late 20s

Late twenties

The circle stops growing on its own. People pair off, move, work more. This is where "work, home, gym" sets in. The plan's first two weeks matter most here: you have to rebuild the doors into your week on purpose.

30s

Thirties and beyond

Fewer parties, more directness, and women who know what they want. Apps and friends-of-friends do most of the work; conversations get to the point faster and that suits most men. If your twenties were mostly career, this is where a deliberate plan pays off quickest.

Never

Never had a girlfriend

More common than you think and less visible than you fear. Nobody worth dating asks for a count. The only thing it changes is that you skip the step people usually learn in their teens. Asking clearly, and there is a page for exactly that.

Shy

Shy or anxious

Pick recurrence over volume: the same people every week, the activity as the conversation. Ask by message. Do the one-conversation-a-day practice from weeks 3–4 for longer than two weeks. If the fear is the main problem, treat the fear.

New city

Just moved

The one situation where an app-heavy mix is right for the first two months, because you have no warm channels yet. Build them in parallel: two recurring activities in the first fortnight, before loneliness makes the app feel like the only door.

Myths checked

What the top results tell you, and what the evidence says

The claimWhere it comes fromWhat is actually true
"Get a girlfriend in 5 minutes / this weekend"Video titles and autocompleteNo mechanism exists. Every real timeline is weeks to months, because it depends on meeting people who then decide.
"How to make a girl fall in love with you"One of the most-asked questions in the search resultsYou cannot make anyone. You can be available, kind, interested and clear, which is what people fall for.
"The 3-3-3 rule"Social mediaA rule of thumb (three dates, three months, three years), not research. Useful as "don't decide on one evening", useless as a schedule.
"Learn how to touch / lead her / don't let her phase you"Pickup-derived guides in the top tenFrames her as an obstacle. Pew: 57% of women report harassing behaviour from someone they dated. The tactics that read as "confident" in these guides are the ones women describe as the problem.
"Stop searching and it will happen"Well-meaning adviceHalf true. Stop forcing, yes. But couples meet where people meet; if no new people enter your week, nothing happens.
"You need to fix yourself first"Self-improvement contentImprove alongside, not instead. There is no finished state, and waiting for one is avoidance with a productive face.
"Ask her friends to find out if she's interested"School-era adviceAsk her. Going through friends makes a private question public and a no expensive for her.
"Persistence pays off"FilmsSix in ten women aged 18–34 on apps say someone kept contacting them after they said no (Pew). Persistence after a no is the single most-reported bad experience, not a romance.

Questions

Getting a girlfriend: frequently asked

Why is it so hard to get a girlfriend?

Partly because the numbers are against young men specifically: Pew found 63% of men under 30 describe themselves as single against 34% of women the same age, and single men are far more likely than single women to be looking (61% vs 38%). Partly because the main channel has changed: meeting online overtook meeting through friends around 2013, and apps reward a narrow set of skills. And partly because most men spend their effort on the wrong variable: appearance and technique, when the thing that actually moves the odds is how many people they talk to each week.

How long does it take to get a girlfriend?

There is no average worth trusting, but there is a realistic shape. Building a social life where you meet new people takes a couple of months to feel normal. From there, most men who ask people out clearly and regularly are dating within a few months. Anyone promising five minutes, a weekend, or a guaranteed method is selling something. The 12-week plan is designed to change the inputs you control; the output arrives on its own schedule.

Is it normal to have never had a girlfriend at 21 or 25?

Yes. Pew's 2025 analysis of census data found 86% of adults aged 18 to 24 are unpartnered, and 42% of all US adults were unpartnered in 2023. Never having had a relationship by your early or mid-twenties is common enough that nobody worth dating will treat it as a flaw. What matters is what you do from here, not the count so far.

How do I get a girlfriend if I'm shy?

Shyness changes the method, not the outcome. Choose settings with built-in repetition — a weekly class, a club, a team — where you see the same people and conversations start themselves. Ask by message rather than in person if that is genuinely easier. And practise the small version: one short conversation a day with anyone. The National Institute of Mental Health describes progressively confronting avoided situations as a standard part of therapy for social anxiety, and that is exactly what a low-stakes daily conversation is.

Should I use dating apps or meet someone in real life?

Both, and the data says why. Meeting online is now the single most common way US couples meet, but three in ten adults have used an app and experiences split almost evenly. 53% positive, 46% negative in Pew's 2023 survey. Apps give you volume; a social life gives you people who already like you before the ask. The men who do best run one app properly alongside two recurring real-world activities, not one or the other.

What do girls look for in a guy?

The most consistent answer from research, not from forums: kindness, intelligence and health rank as very important for both men and women across cultures, and a 2021 cross-cultural study of mate preferences found kindness rated highest of all, around 6.2 on a 7-point scale for both sexes. Humour helps too. Men's humour production and women's laughter both track with women's dating interest in speed-dating studies. Notice what is not on the list: height, income and mysteriousness.

What is the 3-3-3 rule for dating?

It is a social-media rule of thumb, not research: three dates before deciding whether you like someone, three months before defining the relationship, three years before marriage. Treat it as a reminder not to decide anything on one evening. Do not treat it as a schedule; couples that work vary enormously.

Can I get a girlfriend in my 30s?

Yes, and in some ways more easily. Pew found that half of all singles are not looking for a relationship or dates at all, and people in their thirties are more often clear about what they want. The channels shift. Fewer parties, more friends-of-friends, activity groups and apps, and the conversations get more direct. If your twenties were mostly work, your thirties are when a deliberate plan pays off fastest.

How can I make a girl fall in love with me?

You can't, and the guides that claim you can are the reason this question exists. What you can do is be someone it is easy to fall for: available, kind, interested in her rather than in winning, and clear about what you want. Attraction is her decision; your job is to make the decision easy and the answer honest.
